Joan McFarland

Writer, composer, director

Joan McFarland began her musical career at Michigan State University, writing original music, performing and recording with a folk trio called Blue John. She moved to Fairfield County and started her own band called – The Joan McFarland Band which played original songs as well as covers. She then became involved with Kineticos Dance Company, singing and playing guitar on stage with the dancers and also co-writing a children's musical titled, Bagtown. In the early 1980s, Joan became the female lead singer in The Silver Streaks band, performing at private functions, local clubs and concert venues. She then joined the band, Nightbreeze, singing lead plus playing piano, guitar and saxophone.

Her first endeavor at writing musical theater for children was The Great Crate Self-Esteem Time Machine Adventure, which was co-written and performed by Joan and her partner, Ginny Ruggieri. She began writing and directing for Crystal Theatre in the late 1990s. Joan has written and directed five musicals at Crystal for elementary and middle school students. They are; “Goose Ally Gang”, “Pulaski Park”, “Bagtown”, “Rat, Juice and Marmalade” and “Nightmare at Dream Camp”. .
